Building Community Strength with a Purpose

The Brooklyn Neighborhood Improvement Association, founded in 1980, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving Central Brooklyn and East New York. Born out of a community response to urban decay, BNIA has spent over four decades tackling housing instability, economic challenges, and neighborhood decline. Based at 465 Sterling Place, Brooklyn, NY 11238, it serves as a HUD-certified housing counseling agency and a key player in affordable housing development.

Our Mission

BNIA’s mission is to empower low and moderate income residents of Central Brooklyn and its surrounding areas; to encourage and support leadership, neighborhood development and community participation in order to address the housing and economic development needs of the area. Our Impact Includes

Tackling City Challenges with BNIA

At the Brooklyn Neighborhood Improvement Association (BNIA), we’re dedicated to shaping a brighter future for Brooklyn’s youth. Our Youth Empowerment & Development program equips young residents of Central Brooklyn, Crown Heights, Brownsville, and Ocean Hill with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to thrive. Since 1980, BNIA has championed youth through initiatives like Project Helping Hands and the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), funded by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). These programs aren’t just jobs—they’re a launchpad for growth.
For over three decades, BNIA’s SYEP has provided work experience to more than 15,000 economically disadvantaged youths aged 16-24. In 2014 alone, we placed 450 young people in meaningful roles across the city, blending on-the-job training with career exploration, work readiness, and academic support. Our approach goes beyond employment— it’s about building leaders who can transform their communities. Project Helping Hands, started in 1980, continues to offer skills development and community service opportunities, fostering a sense of purpose.
We believe every young person deserves a chance to succeed, especially in a borough where systemic challenges often limit opportunities. Our team works closely with participants, providing tailored guidance to help them overcome barriers and pursue their goals.
